In 1933, a resolution of the Sabha Prathinidhi Mandalam led to the formation of Mar Thoma Yuvajana Sakhyam (MTYS), the youth organization of the Malankara Mar Thoma Church. MTYS functions as an approved body of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church with wings instituted in all continents, which strive to unite youths under one umbrella. The organization was formed with a vision to help the youths of the Mar Thoma church to accept Jesus Christ as their savior and Lord, and bear witness to His powers.
The first governing body of MTYS included Rev. V.P Mammen as the first president, Rev. K E Oommen and Rev. C M John (later Juhanon Mar Thoma Metropolitan) as the Vice- Presidents and Mr. V E Thomas (later Rev. V E Thomas), Singapore as the Secretary. Branches of the Sakhyam were set up in the parishes with a four-fold motto of worship, study, witness and service.
In 1945, Dr. M.M Thomas was appointed as the organizing Secretary who dedicated full time hours to the service of the Sakhyam. Under his dynamic leadership, the Sakhyam struck deep roots and spread its branches far and wide.
Most of the Parishes, both inside and outside of Kerala have the branches of the Sakhyam. Group of such branches forms a Centre (Pradeshika Group). There are number of such Centers under each Diocese. According to the Constitution of the Sakhyam, the presiding Bishop of the Church will serve as the President of the organization.
To equip the youths of the Mar Thoma Church to accept Jesus Christ as Lord, God and Savior.
To guide all youths of the Church to grow in to the totality of Christ.
To impart to the youths of the Church necessary training in worship and Christian fellowship.
To develop among the youths: love for the church, belief in Christian principles, the interest to support in the overall growth of the church and its institutions.
To give youth active participation in the evangelistic work of the Church.
To organize conferences, discussion groups and training camps to impart knowledge of the Bible, study of the history, faith and practices of the church, and focus on ecumenical movements, contemporary problems and instill interest in social transformation.
In order to achieve the aims mentioned, the goal is to establish Sakhyam Shakhas in every Parish and instruct and train the youths through worship, study, service and witness.
